If I were to pick one recurring theme in my artwork it would be the marking of time and the cycle of growth, decay and renewal. Like the device in old movies where the calendar pages are flying off the wall, we are surrounded by events that mark the unrelenting passage of time. The subject matter I’m drawn to is organic elements which lend themselves to an expressive line quality and evocative use of colour. The energy of new growth or the softening, bruised fruit and fading flowers both tell an equally beautiful story.
My panels combine collage, acrylic and oil pastel. The collage elements are a mix of Chinese ceremonial paper, botanical details from biology textbooks and random finds. Numbers and daily calendar symbols represent another moment, another day, another year.
A love of classic fruit crate labels, typography and botanical illustration all influence my work. I paint my organic subjects using warm colour, rich textures and layering to suggest the underlying theme of history, time passing, and life cycles.
